How My Palm Frond Developed Legs During Palm Sunday Mass

So, here’s what happened during Palm Sunday mass… and it’s still funny when I think about it.

I had plans to attend the 6:00 AM mass on Palm Sunday, so I could be back early and prepare for a date I had later that day. Everything was planned out… until I opened my eyes and saw that it was already 6:45 AM.

Clearly, I wasn’t going to make it to the early mass, so I reset my plans and got ready for the 9:00 AM service instead. I grabbed my palm fronds and headed to church, excited to celebrate the special feast that commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

The mass went beautifully. The priest gave a moving homily, and everything was in the right spirit. As the service neared its end, I suddenly turned to pick up my palm frond from the seat I left it on… and guess what?

It had vanished.

I blinked twice. Looked again. Nope, it wasn’t there. I asked the people around me if they had seen it, and they all gave me confused “no’s.” I couldn’t help but laugh—someone had stolen my palm frond. In church.

I thought to myself, If someone can steal a palm frond in church, what would they do if it were a phone or wallet?

And that’s the moral of my story: some people don’t care where they are anymore—church or not, they’re out to take whatever they can. This tiny incident reminded me that security consciousness isn’t just for crowded markets or buses. Even in the most unexpected places, you have to be alert and watch your belongings.

So here’s my advice:

  • When next you go to church—or anywhere—keep your things close, even if it’s just a palm frond.

Have you ever had something stolen in church or somewhere unexpected?
